Abstract: | Brandenburg Concerto The First Brandenburg Concerto is scored for three groups of instruments: horns – oboes with bassoon – strings; the use of horns suggests that it was written for use on some particular occasion. Horn players were, however, so frequently engaged from outside Cöthen that Bach did not consider it necessary to eliminate the horn parts of the work’s original version, which still survives, when preparing the final version. During his revision of the score Bach added a violin piccolo, which sounds a minor third higher than it is written. At the same time he added the third movement, which did not exist in the original score, here giving an important solo role to the violin piccolo; at time particular instruments are chosen from each of the instrumental groups to engage in passages of dialogue with the violin piccolo.
