Abstract

The Complete Wind Quintets This recording of Reicha's twenty-eight wind quintets comprise a series of ten compact discs. The members of the Albert Schweitzer Quintet have attempted to make each disc representa¬tive of the rich diversity of thematic expression, tonal combinations, and performance techniques offered by the music; most of the discs contain three varying works each, dramaturgically arran-ged so as to create ten program entities. Hoping to serve in the listener's interest, the performers have opted for this aesthetic presentation rather than a mere chronological ordering according to opus number. For listeners who own the entire series and wish to locate a specific number, we have added a short table of contents of the individual discs to the chronological list of titles. The first edition of Reicha's Opus 100 appeared in Paris in 1820, with the metronome marks as the composer's own original tempo recommen¬dations for all the wind quintets; and we have included these marks along with the individual movement designations. Our production is thus not only the first complete recording of Reicha's wind quintets, most of which have never been recorded before at all; we also feel that the per¬formances can lay claim to historical accuracy.
