üstablished in 1971, the Staatsorchester of Frankfurt an der Oder rapidly developed into one of the most important ensembles in East Germany. Its crucial artistic breakthrough carne in 1990 when the Greek conductor Nikos Athináos was installed as general mu-sic director of the City of Frankfurt an der Oder. Tours to Poland, Latvia, Israel, Russia and Spain document th8 development of the or-chestrato Brandenburg's leading music-mak-ers. The ensemble nas made successful ap-pearances at important Germán concert ven-ues (including the Philharmonic Halls in Ber¬lín and Cologne) and at famous music festi-vals like the "Choriner Musiksommer" and "Probaltica".
In keeping with its location on Germany's Eastern border, the orchestra has made a point of pursuing joint projects with its East¬ern European neigibours, such as the per-formance of Mahler's 8th with the Poznan Philharmonic and three Polish choirs ¡n Frank-furt and Poznan in 1994.
