Abstract: | Johann Bach Most of Bach's instrumental œuvre was composed between 1717 and 1723, the years of his tenure as Kapellmeister to prince Leopold of anhalt-cöthen. In the earlier of these of these works, principally for larger ensembles, his interest was engage aboe all by the interplay between groups of instruments with different timbres- between soloists and ripieno accompaniment- typical of the Italian concerto. As time passed ,he grew increasingly interested in extending the principle of concertante contrast into the compositional structure itself, and this led him at the same time to compose for smaller ensembles and thus to chamber music and keyboard music. |
