In July 1881 Brahms wrote to a friend that he had composed 'a tiny piano concerto with a tiny, dainty scherzo'. Behind the rather ponderous jest- for the B flat Concerto is, as Brahms fully recognised, one of the longest in the repertoire - lay a certain defensiveness. This frequently surfaced and was the result of the deep scar left by the utter failure of his First Piano Concerto (over which he had agonised for several years when in his mid-twenties, casting it first as a two-piano sonata, then as a symphony, before settling on its final form). At the age of fortyeight, however, he was no longer poor and unknown but much honoured, with two successful symphonies and a controversial violin concerto behind him.
